Hybrid Courses

1. Chapter 28
Hybrid courses are classes that involve face to face lectures as well as a web based portion of the course. My last semester of undergraduate classes I had a social statistics class that met twice a week, but the labs, homework and exams were online. The instructor would upload a PowerPoint presentation of the lectures each week on the ecollege page.  The lab occurred during a designated time apart from the lecture so we could receive extra help with the material covered in class, homework, or if you did not have computer access at home you could use your lab time to take advantage of the computers. Exams were also taken in the lab. We could use our textbooks during the exam, but many students still had trouble passing. What I realized after passing the course was that the professor used every resource available to him to help relay the knowledge needed to pass the course. It was up to the student to take advantage of the resources. This reason this became prevalent to me was due to the fact that many students were blaming the professor’s accent for their shortcomings in the course. However, the fact that he provided so many different opportunities to comprehend the curriculum eliminated that excuse. If his accent was the reason that students were not doing well, the resources he made available online and in the lab had all of what he taught in his lectures.

Academic distributed learning is any form of an online learning structure such as online universities or certificate programs. They can range from a variety of things. Some major programs are only offered online. The University of Phoenix is a big and recognized university known for their online learning system. Some schools even offer religious pastoral degrees at your disposal online.

Corporate distributed learning is a method that allows companies to provide training or knowledge needed at job sites. This allows companies to cut cost of paying the instructor to teach the training and has the information structured in a form that the employees will be able to understand and gain the knowledge needed. My Job at the student center has yearly hazard training, sexual harassment training, and ethnical training that must be done by every employee. The system a part of the Texas A&M data base system but is a section specializing in those training exercises.  The Texas A&M single sign on web site is used for employee timesheets and for employee training.

Virtual classes are classes offered online, much like the academic distributed learning, but this may have a meeting for specialized lessons. I found a very interesting story about a child who was not doing well in a traditional class setting but when she enrolled into a virtual charter school her learning excelled.

An example of distributed learning in a physical location would be using various methods in a class room or an environment in which someone is giving instruction. I took a criminal justice class titled forensic science that was multi campus based. The instructor would teach the class from the Commerce campus and the Navarro junior college would watch a live stream set up in a class room at their location. The professor would give us the test on one day and schedule the Navarro campus another so that he could give the tests in person.

2. Chapter 29
The course that comes to mind that had no reusability was history of motion picture. It was the only class that would fulfill the requirements to transfer to an out of state school from my junior college. The teacher was an older man was real dull (in mannerisms and speech), and the class was scheduled in the evening. He would show films from the early 1940s and quiz us on different directors and screenwriters. I cannot remember anything from that class nor do I think it was applicable to anything in my field of study. Maybe it is relevant to a theatre major. Knowing that this course had nothing to do with my studies and that it was just a requirement course made my attitude about the course different. If the course were made more interactive then the curriculum would not have been learned in a memorized form, meaning learning just to pass a test. A way of making the class more interactive is requiring the class to film a short movie of any kind. This may have had drawn the interest of the students and helped them to pay more attention in class. In ETEC 524 class I created a wiki for my fraternity to keep a more efficient line of communication open between the active and alumni members. I plan to continue to use it even after I complete the course. In this field everything that I have learned has been able to be utilized in a later course, in my studies, and work. I am also more comfortable with different forms of technology. If students could start focusing on the specific area at an earlier point of time instead of taking classes that have no reusability, I believe more students would excel. Instead of taking 30 units for your major and 30 for university requirements, why not let them take 60 units of the major classes to help build on the knowledge they are interested in acquiring?

Rich media video series

4. Chapter 31
Browsing different types of nanotechnology applied across multiple fields, I thought about a medical application. Many people are fighting to stop smoking cigarettes. I can imagine a nanotechnology that would release nicotine into the bloodstream to satisfy cravings and be programmed with a weaning system.

5. Chapter 32
The point of view I tend to side with is the broad and inclusive road. I chose this road because it seems to be an optimistic road, and it is open to new ideas and ways to produce the best results. I am not saying that the strait and narrow road doesn’t work or produce positive things but sometimes sticking to the old fashioned way can lose the objective of the present because everything in time evolves.

Reflection #1

Reflection #1     Instructional Technology is a collaboration of different ways to utilize technology to bring about the maximum performance for teachers and students. Instructional technology gives teachers the resources to provide detailed lesson plans, interactive learning experiences and thorough instructions on assignments .Many tools can be considered as useful technology for the class setting. For example the internet, whiteboards, projectors, DVD players, ipads, and downloadable applications all are different forms of technology accessible to educators.   Technology provides students and teachers different ways of staying in constant contact such as emails, blogs and chat rooms. The elementary school in which I work we use projectors to show different educational documentaries from a variety of countries in aspiration of expanding the students cultural awareness. We also have different online tutoring practice for math and readin...

Human Performance Technology

1.      A performance problem at my workplace is the improper way that the teachers interact and handle the children. Many of the students have stopped attending the program altogether because of this.   If the program does not have an average of eighty children a day the state will no longer fund the program. Recently, a new person was hired as my supervisor. Before he was hired attendance was not at all a problem. Though it must be stated, I do not believe that he is the problem. The problem lies with teachers that are also new to the program.   Before starting a job one should have to thoroughly understand what the job entails. All educators should realize that having patience is so important. An educator’s goal is to develop their students in a particular area. Any and all development takes time; some students take longer than others.   My co-workers display no patience with the children, and in return the children do not respect them nor attend...

Section 5.

1. Rapid Prototyping - Essentially a prototype for any technology used before the “bugs” are worked out would satisfy the definition of rapid prototyping. A classroom being issued the latest Apple iPad before the release date to use it in multiple forms of learning and giving the company feedback would be a specific example of rapid prototyping. Ultimately, this can be used in education to find the most appropriate formats and methods of presenting a technology to students as well as instructing the students with the technology. It allows you to realize the effectiveness or lack thereof based on the model that has already been developed and work out any kinks according to that.  2. Military Training- For those in a classroom setting I would capitalize on utilizing videos, online courses, online assessments and etc. During this time I would make sure that those with more knowledge and hire ranks thoroughly ...
