Human Performance Technology

1.     A performance problem at my workplace is the improper way that the teachers interact and handle the children. Many of the students have stopped attending the program altogether because of this.  If the program does not have an average of eighty children a day the state will no longer fund the program. Recently, a new person was hired as my supervisor. Before he was hired attendance was not at all a problem. Though it must be stated, I do not believe that he is the problem. The problem lies with teachers that are also new to the program.  Before starting a job one should have to thoroughly understand what the job entails. All educators should realize that having patience is so important. An educator’s goal is to develop their students in a particular area. Any and all development takes time; some students take longer than others.  My co-workers display no patience with the children, and in return the children do not respect them nor attend regularly. At least two kids have stopped attending the program each week due to being mistreated.  The mistreatment is not outright horrible, and it seems that the only people that notice are my co-workers that have been at the school and me. The supervisor’s role does not permit him witness the mistreatment. The mistreatment is not outrageous which is why not many people have taken notice of it besides myself and the co-workers that have been at the school for a while and the supervisor has a overseeing eye on things so he does not see the subtle mistreatments that I witness. The teachers constantly yell at the children and the way they word what they say is absurd. I over hear them screaming things like “shut your mouth” and “sit your butt down.” That language is neither necessary nor appropriate. They punish the kids that they are most frustrated with for things that they allow other students to do. When it is time to go the kids rush out!   The simplest non-instructional solution is to briefly address these encounters or to come up with standard methods of telling the students to do things without explicitly telling them (i.e. saying “1… 2… 3….” to get the students to settle down).

2.     EPSS- (Electronic Performance Support System) A computer system that provides quick assistance and information without requiring prior training to use it. It may incorporate all forms of multimedia delivery as well as AI techniques such as expert systems and natural language recognition.

I preferred this definition because it was the only definition that referred to EPSS as not “requiring prior training to use it.” I feel as though this is an important component to EPSS, and it is also an element that makes it that much more efficient and valuable. EPSS have not been used because people are not aware that they exists and the effectiveness of them. I definitely believe they will be utilized more in the future because it is another resource to ensure that people understand how to use a technology. It eliminates the necessity of workshops.

3.     As an event coordinator, there are particular ways in which the rooms must be set up for different types of events as well as many layouts that have been found to not be space efficient or effective for the event taking place. A major problem that occurs is that rooms will be set up incorrectly. I believe it will be beneficial to have a PowerPoint shown to the employees that displays the general layout of the rooms which most appropriate for different events. An explanation of the PowerPoint would be necessary due to certain particulars and can be recorded. Due to trial and error, many suggestions for improvement can be made. I believe there should be a wiki set-up to allow for constant updating for improvements and that displays the best manner in setting up the rooms. The PowerPoint can be made available on the wiki as well as videos displaying how to set up electronic devices.

4.      I believe that we are exposed to a form of informal learning daily.  To name a few examples, I am taking all online courses for my graduate program. I have learned how to prepare several meals from watching Food Network. I have repaired a dryer and my PS3 from watching a video online and looking at forums. Though, I will discuss in detail my latest endeavor of becoming a unlicensed barber. The experience was interesting and very informative. It was of course engaging because it was something in which I had great interest. My role was a dual role. I was both the student and a somewhat instructor to myself. Many things were trial and error. Though there was a particular channel that I referenced on YouTube that had videos of a barber demonstrating different techniques. I had to reference many websites and videos to gain a thorough understanding though. I even referenced a website to decide on what specific supplies I needed.

  1. Must admit I was a bit bothered as an outsider as well with your report of how teachers are responding to students. All humans, no matter what age, respond best to people that respect them. I hope your organization does find a solution to this problem.

I agree with you that we are exposed to informal learning daily. I love the examples you shared to include learning new recipes on the cooking chanel. I have replicated many recipes from there as well. Also enjoy watching Chopped. :-)

Reflection #1

Reflection #1     Instructional Technology is a collaboration of different ways to utilize technology to bring about the maximum performance for teachers and students. Instructional technology gives teachers the resources to provide detailed lesson plans, interactive learning experiences and thorough instructions on assignments .Many tools can be considered as useful technology for the class setting. For example the internet, whiteboards, projectors, DVD players, ipads, and downloadable applications all are different forms of technology accessible to educators.   Technology provides students and teachers different ways of staying in constant contact such as emails, blogs and chat rooms. The elementary school in which I work we use projectors to show different educational documentaries from a variety of countries in aspiration of expanding the students cultural awareness. We also have different online tutoring practice for math and readin...

Section 5.

1. Rapid Prototyping - Essentially a prototype for any technology used before the “bugs” are worked out would satisfy the definition of rapid prototyping. A classroom being issued the latest Apple iPad before the release date to use it in multiple forms of learning and giving the company feedback would be a specific example of rapid prototyping. Ultimately, this can be used in education to find the most appropriate formats and methods of presenting a technology to students as well as instructing the students with the technology. It allows you to realize the effectiveness or lack thereof based on the model that has already been developed and work out any kinks according to that.  2. Military Training- For those in a classroom setting I would capitalize on utilizing videos, online courses, online assessments and etc. During this time I would make sure that those with more knowledge and hire ranks thoroughly ...
